Creating Glyphs

For a dictionary project we used lots of phonetic glyphs. The most of them can be made from an ordinary font just by transforming (rotating, mirroring) a glyph or attach an accent to it. There is also the "ezh" character, and unfortunately the Minion fonts used didn't have it, but the similar "yogh". Michael Everson has an interresting article about yogh vs. ezh here. So I combined "z" and "yogh" to produce the real "ezh". BTW, the TIPA-Fonts have only a glyph named "yogh", but it looks like "ezh" anyway.

Database Publishing with ConTeXt

The new catalogues arrived last week. More than 3000 pages from ca. 35 MB textual data typesetted with ConTeXt . Only the volume with the index (discussed here and here) is done fully automatically. The other three volumes required sometimes manual placement adjustment of the ads. A sample spread is shown below.

Wenn Grafiker wissenschaftliche Bücher bewerten …

Jedes Jahr setzt sich die Liste der prämierten wiss. Bücher der Stiftung Buchkunst nahezu ausnahmslos aus den folgenden Gebieten zusammen: Design, Kunst, Architektur, Medizinbilder. Dazu kommt ab und zu auch mal was anderes, wenn das übliche Nomenklatura ein Sonderprojekt abschließt. Ich habe es noch nie erlebt (könnte mich aber irren, so genau verfolge ich das nicht), dass ein Mathe-, ein Phsyik- oder ein Linguistikbuch ausgezeichnet oder wenigstens besprochen wurde; oder ein Konferenz-, bzw. Sammelband. Es sollten vielleicht auch Bücher aus dem normalen Satz- und Verlagsbetrieb bewertet werden, und nicht nur irgendwelche zusammengeklickte Semesterprojekte. Die Frage ist nur, welcher Grafiker kann schon richtig Mathesatz bewerten? Hermann Zapf vielleicht. Ich war mal in Leipzig zu einer Vorstellung der ausgezeichneten Bücher. Eine der Aussagen war etwa: »[Natürlich ist es nicht lesbar], aber hören Sie was für ein tolles Geräusch das Buch in den Schuber macht!« (Imaginäre Ergänzung von mir) Dazu fällt mir noch ...

Math Times and Symbol not so slanted

Following my assumption in recent discussion on usent I modifed quick & dirty the mathptmx sources slanting the Symbol font not too much (0.120) and slanting the Times-Italic font back to match Symbol. Below is a piece of testmath set that way. The whole PDF can be found here. Especially in an italic environment a little bit different math font looks pleasant. The spacing must be corrected, I didn't change the default adjustment from mathptmx sources. For comparation, below the original mathptmx

Typesetting Index Entries (2): Details for TeXnicians

After describing the publisher's demands on typesetting list entries in a previous article, here comes the TeX-code that does the job. It is really plain TeX, because the whole catalogue is set with ConTeXt, and since I'm not familiar with that package, all my macros had to be done on low plain level. Let's recall the rules first: An index entry consists of name and number part. The name part should be set ragged right and hanging after the first line. At least one word from the name part and one number should be on one hanging and justified line, connected with dots, if there is enough place. Consequent number lines should be set flushed right. An index entry comes from the database already formated as a TeX macro like this: \indexp{New Gallery of Arts and Friends with a very, very long imaginary line Abdolrahaman, S.}{031445, 031448, 031449, 031452, 031453, ...

Панаир на колата, ах не, на книгата

Пиейки поредното еспресо преди следващия разговор с издателство, дочувам български говор: Представителен мъж телефонира с мобилния си. Седейки почти ухо до ухо, неволно станах свидетел на разговора. Темата беше: покупка и превоз на коли. Изненадах се само за секунда. Иначе това само потвърди едно от години наблюдавано от мен явление, че по какъвто и повод да се намират българи в ФРГ, основна тема си остава колата: покупка, ремонт, резвервни части и т.н. По-късно чух бългаски говор на щанда на Cornelsen. Видно отчаяна преводачка превеждаше от немски на бългаски на жена в напреднала въздраст, чиито изражение на лицето беше като на български купувач на автомобил в Германия непосредствено преди момента на договарянето на цената: нещо средно межу увъсен и тип борец.

Math example page: G. Ohm, “Die Galvanische Kette”, 1827

This is an example page from Ohm's work. It has been published 1827 and reprintend in 1989. Some commentars: The math bin operators like "+", "-", "= " are as espected big sized; the space around the relaton ":" are also (es espected by me) relative big (I plan an article about typesetting a ratio too); the prime is inverted! Why?

About sizes of basic math binary operators, like “+” “-”, etc.

There was recent complaint on the german tex newsgroup, that the signs plus, minus, etc. in mathpazo, wich are taken from CM math fonts, are too big and don't match Palatino. I had the same complaint time ago from a copyeditor, and IIRC he complained about the big plus sign in CM. This is of course nonsense. The signs plus, minus, equal etc. have to be large, especially in display math or chem enivronments. I've made 3 examples, just to compare quickly the visual appearance of the sizes. They show a small piece of AMS testfile testmath.tex. The first example ist made with Mathpazo: The second one is also Mathpazo, but with quick and durty hacked sources to get many math signs directly from Palatino: The third example is converted from the sample PDF file with the PAmath fonts: IMHO, the small "plus", "equal" and especially "times" are dark and ...

Ein schönes Buch ist fertig

Pünktlich zur Frankfurter Buchmesse ist ein Projekt fertig geworden, das fast das ganze Spektrum unserer Verlagsdienstleistungen abgedeckt und vor allem ein schönes, durchaus (typografisch) sehenswertes Ergebnis geliefert hat. Unsere Aufgaben umfassten: Scannen und OCR der alten Buchvorlage Texterfassung (Deutsch/Altgriechisch) und -abgleich, logische Auszeichnung der Elemente Umsetzung der Verlagsvorgaben zum Layout Programmierung der Strukturelemente (z.B. Verknüpfung der Randmarken mit den Endnoten, Kolumnentitel, Register, etc.) Einarbeitung der Lektoratskorrekturen Das folgende Bild zeigt die Doppelseite aus dem Foto oben direkt aus dem PDF konvertiert. Es gibt kein Element, das manuell gezählt, zusammengefasst, ausgerichtet, oder sonst irgendwie nicht automatisch gesetzt wurde. Hier treten die Qualitäten von TeX besonders hervor. Mehr zum Buch gibt es auf den Verlagsseiten. Dort steht auch eine Leseprobe bereit. Es war wirklich eine in jeder Hinsicht anspruchsvolle Arbeit, an der wir gleichzeitig viel Freude gehabt hatten. Wünschen wir dem Buch viel Erfolg. Es hat es verdient.
